Bagguy vs the man of steel

Superman wins obviously.

Wellzers. Fashionably late to the party as always. But the man of steel did indeed hit cinemas at some point in the immediate past. Never has a community stood so divided as the geek community dose today. Wells. That's grossly over egging it. The split is really between comic book fans and the hated normals and between actual fans of superman and folk that could just take or leave the big boy scout. Id like to say up front that I did enjoy man of steal. I thought it was ok. And at points it was even quite fun. However. This was not the film big supes deserved.

Now before we get in the negatives there is a fair bit to like about the film. There's HELLA action for one thing. Now. A lot of folk would say that's a bad thing. And ayes it is at certain bits but we'll get to that later. Come on now folk. You need lots and lots of ACTION in a superman film. Like. Come on now. Its good they went all action. You get to see supes DO stuff. With a big budget. And for the most part it is awesome. You can call it dumb if you like but I like that they just went all out with the fighting and the physical god level craziness.

I quite liked the bits where superman wasn't superman yet. Now put away your torches and pitch forks and let me explain. Superman not being superman can get quite hateful. It was a risk they were always going to run what with it being yet another origin film but they pulled it off quite nicely if you ask me. From the trailers it looked like we would be getting quite a bit of fisherman supes which I think you'll agree looked quite hatefully hipster. But as it turned out the fisherman shtic was only a vehicle to get supes to an oil rig to do some life saving. See it COULD have been hateful but it turned out fine.

There was a fair chunk at the beginning of the film that took place entirely on krypton. I here that as base brakery as the film is this part was well received. I put that down to jor els general pimpness and the fact he rides a dragon at one point. I mean, I really wasn't prepared for the dragon. I should have been. What with that one issue of supergirl ware she rides a dragon. So I should have been aware kyrptonian dragons were a thing. I just wasn't expecting to see it in the real big deal synder/nolan superman reboot is all. And oh my it was awesome. Im not really a big dragon man. Its just the sheer absurd surprise of it the thing.

Jor el himself was quite the lad. Like he manages to CQC the fuck out of general zod. General zod. Krypton's legendary soldier. Defeated by a sqwisihe scientist. In hand to hand combat. Well. I guess you get points for being supermans dad. And fair play he is killed by zod eventually. Now here's where the ladness comes in. jor el dose indeed kick the bucket in the opening act but comes back. As YAMI jor el. If you've followed any of our coverage of superior spider-man you'll know about our unending love fer yami pete. God king of the banter. Now yami jor el dose get some choice bits of banter here and there but he mainly utilises his yami ness to cut about. I amazingly approve of this.

Superman him sell came off quite well as a character I think. Well for the most part. Folk just never seem to shut the shit up about superman being a terrible character to write for. That because he's such a god he's unrelatable. These people are actual bastards. Supes is a grate dude. And ayes he's powerful. Juggling planets and all that. Power dose not make you unrelatable or just a bad character because of it. There are countless actual gods cutting about comics that folk love. Its a trendy double standard to hate on superman. Because he's apparently cheesy or childish. That said iv seen some encouraging things from other folks reviews about man of steal that seem to show the myth that its impossible to do a good superman story is somewhat vanishing. Good stuff !

Man of steel had a darn solid cast all right. Your mileage may vary on if that cast was put to good use though. I herd claims of blandness. I don't see it. But that might just be my own good actor blindness. I tend to see. If a like a particular actor in a particular role ill probs be hella forgiving on the actual acting. That said. Do do think everyone was doing a fairly good job with what the script was giving them. I thought henry cavill did a nice job as superman. Like in the scenes ware he was properly being superman I think he had it locked down. Being so superior to humans superman walks a very dangerous line of smarmyness that's sometimes tricky to pull off. Like you need a wee touch of smarm for the flashiness of the character.

Zod was an all right villain too. I say all right. At the end of the day he was quite shite. I'm not sure he won a single fight. Even like I was saying he lost to jor el. Its a little weird. He is built up as kyriptons greatest warrior so for him to lose AWW the time is quite weird. Though I guess he IS a general so I suppose he's not meant to be the absolute best fighty fighter. I did like him and his gang though. They were quite funky with there power amour and eventful superman sun powers. Supes fights with them we're amazingly dragon ball z. though I suppose that's the only way they could go in this day and age. Its not a bad thing. Even though I'm kinda making it sound like one.

Now with al that said. Man of steel dose have some amazingly hateful unforgivable moments.

Pa kent. Pa kent why. Oh god. Why. What have you done ? You monsters. You actual monsters. Pa kent in the man of steal verse is just. I don't even know what. Like I don't quite comprehend why they made him the way he is. I don't even what to try because he was so hateful. I should actually say what my beef with him was. He's not a lad. Not at all. Pa kent is supermans dad. He's meant to give superman that un shakeable moral compass. He's meant to inspire clark to be more than an ordinary man. Superman may be a god. But he gets what makes him a legend from humanity. From the upbringing the kents gave him. And in this film I don't think I'm far off the mark in calling there pa kent a monster. There's a bit in the trailer where pa kent is conserned that kid clark saved a school bus full of children from drowning. Including all his fiends and bullies. Kid clark asks if he should have let them drown. Pa kent reply's maybe. That is unforgivable. Now I get pa kent wanted to keep his son safe and feared that if the world knew about him they'd probably take clark away and dissect him. Fuck that. Kid clark can lift a bus from a lake on his lonesome. He can take who ever rocks up to the farm looking for him. Now. I can buy that pa kent wants his son safe at any cost. I can. But any other pa kent wid be disgusted at this universe one. Pa kent teaches supes to save as many people as he can BECAUSE he can. Its like pa kents whole deal.
As cool as the final fight in the film was. As much as it averted short lame boss fights at the end of current gen super hero movies and movies in general. It was amazingly stupid. Thousands if not hundreds of thousands of innocent people MUST have died. Metropolis is now just a crater. It be one thing if was just because of zod and the villains and that it was unavoidable. But no. a lot of the damage could have been stopped by superman and some case's it was superman actively causing the damage. Yes you read that right. The last fight of the film is between superman and a fully powered up zod battling in a darn crowded metropolis. They basically go at it like like neo and smith from the last battle of the matrix revolutions. That was fine there because everyone in the matrix was a smith so the collateral damage was lessened and it was somewhat an end of the world scenario. Here. Supes dosent seem to give one single fuck for the people of metropolis. Flinging zod threw buildings and flinging stuff at zod that either impacts around him causing damage to the surrounding area or explodes. EXPLODES. Now I feel the hatefulness might be lessoned if it was just two other random super beings. But this is superman. He would sure as fuck care about the people of the city. Caring about people is what superman dose. SAVEING people is what superman dose. Yes. He'd still be fighting zod but the entire time he'd be thinking about ways of getting zod away from civilians and he'd be saving folk from the buildings zod was collapsing and not actively trying to collapse buildings himself.

Now. We've all trecked threw spoiler country. I should have probably started of by saying that there would indeed be spoilers. But its a fair few weeks after the films release and I feel its common knowledge now. But fair play. I have encountered a fair few folk that have decided to wait for the dvd because of its mixed reviews by actual critics. so for the last bit here. Major ending spoilers.

Man of steel reaches its climax with supes having zod in a head lock in ruins of metropolis. Superman has proven that bizarrely he is the better fighter. Zods no looking well. He's lost his mind just a touch. Well. I suppose he wasn't always there. But my point is. He's gone full mental. It looks like it all over but zod bust out his eye beams on this family that just happens to be standing around. Slowly. Like really slowly. The family could just run away. But naw. There only very slightly trapped. They COULD just walk around the eye beams. But naw. They don't. Like the massive twats they are. Well. my point is. Superman is forced to kill zod. He just snaps his neck. With a crack of thunder. Now to tell the truth. Superman killing dosent bother me as much as it should. I'm not to sure why. It just didn't shock me. I feel like superman has killed folk in the past. What is was though was a massive downer. Like in the cinema we saw it in. the kill just sucked all the fun out of the room. You could totes feel it leave. It was quite the moment. Now I don't want to bleather on about the rights and wrongs of superman just killing fools but its certainly one of the things that has divided folk. I can totes get that. I SHOULD be agreeing with them. Its probably the worst thing ever. But I dunno. Its just something that happened.

So. I quite liked it overall. It man of steel is an all right film spoiled by a few bizarre narrative choices. Though I would say it worth a watch. But maybe only on dvd when it comes out. Which isn't something I want to say about a big new superman film.

Back up banter

Time just keeps on slipping. INTO THE FUTURE. Ayes. Ayes. Mistakes were made. Again. And id like to apologise. Again.

Its been like a month. Long time to you young uns. I'm sure. To us auld folk its hardly been a single blink of an aye. Time gets weird.

Wells a fair few things have happened in the comic world since we last had a wee chat. I'm going to try and go threw them from memory. So If I make a few things up you have been warned.

Green lantern ended ! Wells not really. Its still ongoing and so are the other lantern books. Big goff has stepped down from writing duties. And well. Its over. He packed his bags and took the zeitgeist with him. That and it really did feel like the last ever issue. There was hella universe shite that happed. The guardians are dead. Well mostly. And big sinestros away for a universally road trip. As well as that there was epilogues for all the main lanterns. We've now seen hal grow auld and have a happy ending. It was hella final. But that's fine. Big goff earned the right to do what ever the fuck he wanted to do with the book.

Also. Did I mention that it was FUCKING AMAZING. It MAY be the single best issue of GL I have ever read. Now that's probs the excitement talking. But damn son. It was wall to wall CRAZY AMAZING. Basically everybody rocked up to the first lantern. Called him on his pish. And wreaked his shite. Amazingly. Hals plan to commit suicide to say the day actually worked. Becoming a black lantern. And summoning NECKRON. Ayes. Fan bloody tastic.

Just a week after the “last” green lantern we got the first issue from the new creative team. And I quite liked it. It had a fairly nice vibe. AYES. There was a fair bit NOT to like. Carl ferris was quite the mental. Basically breaking up with hal so she can still be in love with him. Ayes. Quite the mental. Hal is the head of the green lanterns now. I like that. Like. If he grows a bad ass musstahe and gets a desk I think you can agree it be the best thing ever.

Age of ulton ended. Yeah. It was pish. Not even entertaining pish. Confusing hateful pish. That said. There were a few bits of it that were ok. Bizarrely fun even. Like this issue thanks to the resolution we get a shot bit with big miles morales vs GALACTUS. Ayes. Needlessly awesome. Overall though. And I cant believe I'm being this guy. Its worth a miss if you ask me. Its not really needed. I'm sure a few things have been changed around an few new books have been launched. But over all. Fuck ultron.

Superman unchained and batman year zero trotted out the gether like amazing buddy cops. Both were quite gid. I mean unsurprisingly. Both all star teams and both being syders. They were always going to be crowd pleaser's. Year zero was going to be rock solid anyway with it being the on going. It was unchained that needed to prove itself. And it did. For the most part. Supes was being quite the lad saving folk and that. And he dose some investigating. Snyders got all the bases covered it seems. There was this splash page that is a fold out poster. It be fine if it were all lousey gosey but naw. Its aww stuck down. So I didn't unfold it. $5 comic in aww that.

In further synder news. The wake was out. And I also liked it. Yup. Iv gone quite mad ted. It was like aquaman vs third impact. Or john carpenter's the thing vs third impact. Its amazingly evanglion. So far that is. We'll see how the other issues go. Worth a read if you ask me. You already kent that though.

I also got some 90s question comics. Not news I know. But the question had a mullet in the 90s. I wasn't ready at all for that likes. Not at all. Like I know it was a thing for heros in the 80s and 90s to have mullets. But the question likes. I wasn't ready.

Comics the now

Hullos !

Comics right now are pretty damn good. I cant really remember a poor week for ages now. I guess there's a few reasons for that. I'm buying a wee bit more books now. Long gone are the days of only picking up amazing spider man. Damn they were good times. Now marvel has caught up with DC and have started putting out there new stuff. I'm a bit bummed that there renumbered books haven't had a synchronised launch but that might have been a bit too much like the new 52.

Aye I think ill still call it the new 52 on here despite it being auld and not exactly the same 52 books. Its been damn good though. Kept up the pace pretty well. Batman's been there top book since day one and I'm still loving it. The book got off to a rocking start and even though I had my doubts when it looked like that bat god would break snyder pulled it back in style with the silliness of the end of the court of owls and this new bat perfecting his YOUR INSANE paunch. Right now bats is onto another mega arc with the joker back in town starting shite. Its damn good. Ideally id just want an instant bat god win. But for the sake of drama its damn gid.

Action comics its fucking insanely brilliant. Like fucking insanely god like in its awesomeness. At times. Sadly its has its ups and downs. Now the downs arny really downy downs there just not highs. Which is a shame. Now that last issue just gone. #13. hoo lee fuck. Had me crying manly tears. Superman rides to the rescue of a mission to mars base and its apparently British crew. Super man at his supermanyist. A fusion of superman , Dr who and gurren lagann ! At times it felt like Morrison was writing it just foe me it was that spot on to what I like to read about.

Aquaman by the way. He's a bit of a lad. Well no, not really. He's just the standard man on a mission character the big goff likes to write. The aquaman book though. Now there's a hell of a lad. Like all comics its had its ups and downs. Its opening arc had some gosh darn fantastic moments. Establishing everyone in the DC verse thinks of aquaman the way the real world thinks of him. Id have personally like to see him just being the brave and the bold version but the loser hero was an alright way to go. The recent aquamans 90s anti hero team arc could have went badly but the team showed there true colours as not an anti hero team at all but a RANGER time. That last arc had a hell of a Saturday morning cartoon vibe. Its geof johns I know that's his thing but god damn it was glorious. It was the atlantian millennium items that did it for me.

The guardians of the galaxy continue to be moustache twirllingly evil. Its damn entertaining to watch. Sinestro and hal were finally getting down to the serious business of being buddy cops in space but they got sucked into a death hole. So theirs a new green lantern kicking about earth. Surprisingly cool dude. The preview images made him look quite the dick. Running about with a gun. We dinny need another John Stuart. Well no another current comics John Stuart. A justice league cartoon John Stuart would be joyously welcomed with open arms at this point. Aye so the new guy. What's his name. Cool dude. Canny fly yet. Drives construct cars. As fast as the flash. Like I said. Surprisingly cool dude.

Now marvel. Marvels fucking insane. Like proper loopy. Not entirely sure why. But they are. Big news was amazing spider mans getting a renumbering after issue 700. that's a huge kick in the balls. I feel like they renumbered it before and it didn't take. So we're all probs taking bets as to when it resets. Bigger news was that it might not be peter under the mask after 700. now that's probably the biggest ball kicker of the year. Maybe that hole Disney star wars thing. Its defiantly a big deal. Now normally with this kind of thing you'd just write it off as a desperate attempt to build up hype for a book. But here's the thing. Marvels fucking insane. We're at the point ware they could actually kill off peter god damn Parker. In the year of his 50th anniversary and a recent film release. Now I'm not all that up to date on it but hopefully its just dan slott the eternal lad taking the piss. But if not. Calm the fuck doon marvel.

Now despite there insanity they do make quite fine comics. Avengers vs X men was pretty well done in my opinion. Not to everyone's taste I expect. It really was a lot of fighting. But I have to stress. Damn good fighting. Cyclops. Cyclops is an utter bastard. But a loveable bastard. He's just so amazingly evil. That's what I took away from A vs X. I know that's not always been his character but its some thing for him to do at any rate. Marvels moved on from civil war a bit. Now there bastard of the event is at least employable evil unlike Tony stark was back then.

I picked up Two X books in the aftermath of the event. Not really an X fan but I thought id give them a chance. Uncanny avengers just blew me away. Two things did it for me. The the just plain awesome casual vibe. And the red skull stealing prof X's brain. HOW AMAZINGLY RED SKULL IS THAT. Aye prof X has been dead for two hole seconds and BOOM red skulls in there. No hesitation. Proper old school villainy. Now this Wednesday just past big brain Michel bendis swaggered into the room and slammed all new x men on the table. It was actually pretty good. Staggeringly. Now the full impact of the first issue was spoiled by previews but the idea of getting young Scott summers to come to the future and talk some sense into himself is a damn amazing idea. Nice one bendis.

The fantastic four books missed a trick. They ended there current run going to save Dr doom from a universe he crated that turned against him. Aye naw pal. That might be actually what would happen given the circumstances and dooms actual character. But that's not what would happen to the lad doom. Lad doom would never need the fantastic four to rescue him. Lad doom wouldn't need rescuing at all. Lad doom would be off conquering universe's duel wielding infinity gauntlet like the ultra lad he is. Now to the books credit despite this fall at the very last hurdle the issue did have some fine moments and quite doomy lines form the lad himself. Sad that the run over really. The new runs just kicked off. Bit to early to say how its going but baglys art it is grately appreciated.

I decided to pick up iron man. Juuuuuuust as the book was gearing up for its final arc. Gotta say I like what I read. Very very metal gear solid ish. Sad I missed out on the hole run now. Might have to go pick up the trades at some point. Actually I don't think iv bought new trades outside of xmas presents since I started buying comics by the monthly format two or three years ago. Damn likes. That's something for me to think about. Picked up the new number one with him in his new black and yellow armour. Only one issue down of course but so far its not as good as fractions run. Not bad though. A few nice bits here and there. Gotta wait and see ware it go's

Lastly iv been venturing into deeper comic waters. The darker depths of indi comics. Well indi-er than the two big company's. Saga is a damn fine piece of comicbooking. Its the new one by that there y the last man guy. Now a fair bit of it is quite out there for my taste but that's offset buy its incredible comic booky-ness. Its about a couple and the new born child escaping from two factions at war with each other. IN SPACE. Grant Morrison's new book, happy is hopefully a piss take of mark millers indi books in particular and mark miller in general. It is defiantly a piss take but hopefully that will be made official eventually. Happy is a charming Christmas tale of a scumy scum bag and his tiny wise cracking flying purple unicorn buddy. It be horribly depressing if its not a piss take. So you can see why I want it to be one. Has to be. Hopefully

Also I'm back !

Review: Justice League and Subway

Over the last couple of months or so, when buying your favourite DC comic titles you may have been excited when you picked up a book off the shelf and discovered it was slightly bigger than normal. Unfortunately, this is not extra pages devoted to the actual story, it is instead an ADVERSTORY (I just made that up, can you tell?) involving the Justice League and a bunch of famous athletes who I've never heard of because I'm not American teaming up with the Justice League in order to fight villains. Unsurprisingly, these are generally pretty bizarre. Generally they follow the same basic structure:

1)Bunch of athletes are chilling and shit and decide they need amazing Subway(R) food.
2)Villains appear.
3)The Justice League show up.
4)They team up and defeat the enemies.
5)Mention once again how awesome Subway(R) sandwiches are.

Now, let's go over the four issues of this masterful and ground breaking epic individually.

Issue 1

Some Hand Egg players are chillin by a beach, and man are they hungry in the hot Hawaiian sun. But what to buy? Thankfully, this decision isn't hard, and the team soon decide on ENERGISING and delicious Subway(R) sandwiches. Unfortunately, their lunch is interrupted as they tell us about the virtues of Avocado (It's a super food!), Aquaman is washed up on the beach! This seems out of character for the King of Atlantis. It turns out the evil Black Manta and Oceanmaster were trying to kidnap the poor man. :(

Thankfully, just in the nick of time Green Lantern shows up and scoops the villains of out of the ocean and puts them into a massive bucket full of water, while the hand egg players beat the fuck out of dudes. Sadly, Black Manta has decided to fuck this shit and is running away WITH THE SUBWAY(R) SANDWICHES! HOW TERRIBLE!. Just in the nick of time, the rest of the Justice League show up and save the day! The hand egg players muse that if they hadn't had the Subway(R) sandwiches, they wouldn't have had the energy to fight! Thank heavens!

But what of our intrepid hero Aquaman? What happened to him? Is he OK? I sure hope so!

*Spits out coffee*

AQUAMAN.  FUCKING AQUAMAN, THE DEFENDER OF THE EARTH'S OCEANS, HAS LEARNED NOT TO SWIM ALONE.

And then the Handegg players eat their subs, and talk about how good Subway(R) is. The end.

Issue 2

Sadly, none of the other issues lived up to the promise displayed in episode 1, but we shall persevere.

Issue 2 opens with a Basketball player ordering an awesome sub with Avocado in (noticing a theme yet?), but oh no! Buying this delicious food has made him late for his dunk show! No worries though, Mr Nascar racer shows up and offers to give him a ride, but on their way they come across the Justice League in mid fight with Grodd and his army of primates. Despite being late for some Basketball guff, they decide to help the Justice League. Grodd tries to control their minds, but because they ate at Subway(R), they aren't tired and can withstand the pure mental torture. Avocados must be fucking amazing.

Mr Basketball player then throws a ball in Grodd's face, removing his powers through sheer epic force, meaning the rest of the Gorilla's are no longer under his control. But oh no! Basketball-man is late for his dunking thing! Hal has an idea though! He quickly makes a replica Nascarmobile (Complete with all branding, including Subway(R) and moves the car to get there on time! Basketball dude even wins! What a great day! He even has some of his sandwich left!

Issue 3

Amazingly, issue 3 actually contains one athlete I've actually heard of! The greatest Olympian of all time, Michael Phelps! He's with his buddies Gymnastic Chick and Mr Ice Skater in the Gotham City Athletic Training facility, well, training. Some dude turns up with their Subway(R) lunch , and they marvel at the Turkey, Bacon and Avocado sub for a panel. Then Mike tucks into his Meatball Marinara. If I was his trainer I would be worried, those fuckers are unhealthy. Oddly, everything seems to be going OK, are they actually going to get lunch in peace?

No.

Fucking Batman suddenly comes flying through the wall, closely followed by Mr.Freeze and Solomon Grundy. Batman sprays tear gas or some shit and Solomon, and he goes mental and throws him away.  Thankfully, our good hero Green Lantern shows up randomly and saves him in a baseball glove.

But oh no! There's a child in the pool! Why he's inside the pool of an Olympic Training facility with no supervision, I have no idea, but he needs saved damnit! Michael Phelps dives in and saves the little dude,  while the Ice Skater skates about on ice frozen by Mr Freeze, cutting comedy holes so Solomon Grundy can fall through. But who will defeat freeze? Answer: The Gymnast Chick of course! She does some acrobatics and hits him, but it's not quite powerful enough! SHE MUST NOT HAVE EATEN HER SUB! Thankfully, Batman and Hal must have, and they beat the fuck out of him.

After this, they reconvene to talk about Subway(R) products. Despite my earlier assumptions, it seems Batman hadn't eaten a sub, since he enquires how to get the sheer avocado power. Then Phelps eats his THIRD sub. I sincerely hope he's having ham this time, or his London 2012 shall be a failure. Mark my words.

Issue 4

Sadly, we've reached the last issue. Thankfully, they don't go out without an appearance from everyone's favourite fat fuck turned thin Subway(R) corporate shill, Jared Fogle! He's hanging out with some sporting chick I guess, I don't care anymore. Walking down the street to go buy some sandwiches, they see some commotion in a building site and Green Lantern's light. It turns out he's fighting the Manhunter, and apparently not doing so well. He gets thrown up into some girders which fall and almost hit some dude, until Jared saves the day. Seemingly despite not having eaten Subway that day, he still has the Avocado powers. My hypothesis is that he eats Subway(R) so much, he's been permanently imbued with the powers.

After saving the dude, he's about to be attacked by  Manhunter, but the chick (Who apparently is a boxer) punches him with her bare hands and fails. But it's OK! Green Lantern provides some light based boxing gloves, which helps in knocking the dude out. To finish things off, FUCKING JARED has found a cement mixer, and covers him in cement. The rest of the Justice League show up late (they must have been at Subway(R) and finish off the job, Flash by running fast to avoid Manhunter escaping,  Wonder Woman by tying him up and Supes to dry that cement.

And with all the evil enemies of the DCU defeated, Jared and Boxer decide to finally make that trip to Subway(R). An obligatory Avocado reference is made, and all is well in the world. Sadly it seems Jared(R) isn't paid well by his corporate overlords, as he only has $5 on him. This upbeat tale of of healthy eating and overcoming evil ends on a sad tinge of the human tragedy of the recession. Good work DC and Subway(R) restaurants.

So yeah, these comics are fucking terrible, but at least when you buy a comic you get six extra pages for your $2.99 or $3.99, so I got enjoyment that way.
