Comic book word talk. The first. January. 2014. part 1 of 1.

Backs.

Comic book quickies then ? Ayes ? Cools.

I'm pretty sure these comics came out this week. But you know. Time. That whole thing. Not really sure how it works any more at the best of times. Then big x-mass hit and I have no idea. Like its Sunday as I sit here and jab my hand sausages on the keyboard to type this outs but it may as well be Tuesday or some shit for all it feels like.

So ayes. Comics. Cracking stuff. Lotta stuff going on in them. I think. Probably. Its been awhile since I did a proper run down of a weeks comics. Stuffs apparently changed man. I was operating under the impression marvel were the hated mad men . Running about naked in some field somewhere killing off beloved cultural icons and replacing them with mad scientists. But of course. I was wrongly wrongers on the most basic of basic fields. Fields of. Like. Reference . Not sure what I'm trying to say any more. Basically folk hate DC and not marvel. Well people prolly hate both. But people are hella hateful hipster fucks. So that's a given. I can kinda sorta see what folk are saying about DC . I can. They seem to have weird relations with there creative teams. And theres been a slew of cancellations. Then there's the out right dickish bat woman affair. Don't care though. Genuinely don't. Iv become something of a DC fan boy over the past few years. Not sure how or why. Probably just find there books more entertaining. Like marvels entertaining ayes. But in that special lunatic way we discussed before.

Comics !

The flash #26

low five ?

written by christos n. gage art by neil googe

Mmm. Good comic. Hella gid comic. Its got all this crazy amazing goodness all up in it. Goodness that I'm trying to explain here. The pages. They had this thing in them. Goodness ! Ill stop now. Well. No. ill still be talking what with this being the first entry. Barry. Allan. Full. Stops. Barry allan is a bloody machine of good times. He turns up. Dose SOMETHING. Anything. normally running but not always. And then things just tend to work out well. He's just the single most solid guy in comics. As iv very likely harped on about here before. Of course I have. There's not been a bad issues of the flash since the reboot. That could well change though. That cracking first run came to an end last month ish. So I had my reservations about this isssue. Those reservations were hella fucked up during the reading process thankfully. Because flash #26 is Barry Allen is the solidest guy ever- the issue. It helps that its just stand alone filler. This like evil pilot woman is aww going about being a thief and a killer and such. But like as a SKY PIRATE. Ayes. Perfect. Job done. Ima going hame. When I got hame I read on. And my word. The whole issue is basically look what the flash can do. Like aye he's super fast yeah. But he's also you know. Basically a god. With the most broken power set in the history of. Of. Of. Em. History ! Barrys cutting about running on CLOUDS. Straight up. Hella just running on clouds. To catch a plane. There's even a wee flash fact box there. Explaining that yes. Barry is basically god. Well worth a read. Not a jumping on on point what with it being stop gap filler so its more a stand alone treat for the senses. Sense ? Vision ? Senses I guess if you also make your own sound effects to go along with the comics. Which I of course. Totally do.

swim in the sky ! fight dah powah !!

aquaman #26

written by jeff parker art by paul pelletier and netho diaz

Ahh duuno. It was like aquaman. Its a comic. It has pages and panels and coulers and like lines and guff. I ain't in no frame of mind to judge the quaintly of anything right now. I'm still crazy buzzen from Dat flash issue. Like damn sons. Its kinda the prefect comic. That iv read. This month. Its a shame likes. Id totally put it high on my list of the best comics of 2014. but I totes wont remember it loikes in December and of course I wont make a best of list. I don't have that amount of dedication or effort in me. Don't be ridicules. Oh ayes. Aquaman. Big aquaman. Cool guy. Kinda gets hella fucked over as we well know. By popular culture and that. I likes him though. He's like. Got a trident. Annnnnnnnnnnnd. Hes a cool guy. Ayes. This issue big Arthur curry fight like a giant squid /kraken /cuthulu/ kanju beasty. Which. Aye. Of course he dose. Its an aquaman comic. Not much to report really. It was pretty dullish. Again. Like not really bigging up aquaman here as I prolly should. Its hard. Iv always said they should have taken the opportunity of the reboot to make the new 52 aquaman basically the same as he is in the brave and the bold cartoon. Big and brash life of the party legend of human being fish man thing. But naws. They went the acknowledging him as a joke route. Which . Ayes. Did work out pretty well for a while there. Mainly what with it being a goff johns book. But the goff lads hella left nows. It looks to be pretty stormy WATERS ahead for the new creative team. Yes. I'm very proud of the thing I just said. What of it.

patty cake ? is that what that hand game thing is called ?

superman unchained #5

written by scott snyder art by jim lee

Not sure if iv reported this here on the auld blog. If I have I'm sorry for repetition . I am truly sorry if there's repetition here. On the auld blog. But we have to talk about it. See lex luthor. The arch Nemesis of the man of steal. Lex lets cut about in green in purple power armour luthor. Lex luthors SUPER into papercraft. Like big lex was using papercraft things to explain shit to super man in issue one or two . Back then it was only like a page or mibby two of lex with like a pop up book style thing that he had obviously made during his time in prison. It was weird then. But like only kinda. It wasn't a big deal then. Like it wasn't charter defining. Then that last issue happened. And yeah. Lex luthor is SUPER into paper craft now. Like has these wee bone tools specially for it SUPER into it. Like his papercraft has articulation SUPER into it. Its kinda the most magical thing. I don't even want lex to be a villain now. I want his entire deal to be paper craft. I want him to just be cutting about the dc world. Being the go to papercraft guy. Teaching classes. training noobs. Sadly as aww fuck. Lex Luther the paper craft king isn't in this issue at all. Aww we get are plot points from the first transformers film/ overtones of the over arching plan of the reapers from mass effect. And superman being superman. Which ayes. I do hella appreciate that. Kinda just wanted an ish of lex carefully folding up his own set of justice league papercaft dolls. Always next ishh. Always have to hauld on the the hope.

I here comic sans upsets folk. Dont particularly get it myself.

randomers #3

glam as fuck.

ultimate comics x-men issue 23

written by brian wood art by carlo barberi

I have no real experience with the mutants and x-men of the ultimate universe. Lets judge them anyway ! I say no real experience. Like I read the very first arc that mark miller wrote. Though that was like over a decade ago now. Though I have read hella ultimate spider-man with kitty pyde in it. Yes I didn't actually learn all that much about ultimate mutant kind from that. But I like to think it counts for something. That said. I also have no actual clue to what's going on in ultimate marvel theses days. The only ultimate book I keep up with is spider-man and that's fairly isolated from the bigger verse. I gather some sort of civil war type dealy happened in America. Not sure how the mutants fit in likes. Now yes I totally just could go look all this up on wiki but randomers is about just blasting threw some comics and seeing how they stand on there own merits. Writing for the trade be dammed.

So you might have gathered from the cover this a storm centric issue. Fair play likes. Don't think iv ever read a solo storm comic in my life. Well. I say solo. Big colossus is cutting about it for the first wee bit. Seems he killed a dude in cold blood. Seams like a dickish move. But the comic dosent give much explanation or context to it so I wont judge him for it. He also seems to be genuinely affected by the murder or at the very least is acting like he's affected by it. So points there. Its a tricky business this judging a charater by a single issue. But storm here seems kind of like a bit of a bad character. Well. To me at least. She seams fairly week willed. I gusse she's still only a teenager ? That really shouldn't be an excuse at this point in the game. At the very least. Its a shock to compare this storm to the proper universes storm. The proper universes yin is kind of your standard strong female character. And fair play to her. Something of a weather god that she is. In this issue ultimate storm just sort of go's with the flow of things. Which. Would be fine. But like it seems like her opinions change basically every other page. Probably not the best thing to compare the two versions at this point but it was something that seemed rather shonky to me.

So it would seam the American government are rounding up mutants and putting them in camps for the crime of being a mutant. Good. Heartless bastard I knows. But mutants are hella dangerous. And I have to Imagen they must have done something to cause this crackdown. And no. I wont give them the benefit of the doubt. Mutants all tend to be utter dicks. Proper universe or not. And yes this is all commentary on terrorism and immigration and Americas reaction to it. That's fine. Or rather that would be fine if mutants didn't rock the deadly combo of being super powered AND being utter dicks. Like. At some point we're going to have to stop calling them mutants and just start calling then villains. Now. Ill give them points. The mutants might not have killed anyone in this particular issue. Maybe if those sentinels were piloted by humans. Maybe. But ill be generous and just Imagen they were only robbits. Humans don't come off any better here. Though that might just have something to do with them being small towner Americans being depicted in media. There some what hickish. And they do sorta turn storm in to the authority's.

We get a page or two of a mutant cure being rolled out. Cools ? Like normally I'm against anything that kills the magic of a given setting. Like in late series star trek the next generation when we learned warp travel was damaging the fabric of the universe. Just. Naw. Pal. Just like. Dinny go near that shite. The mutant cure idea is kind of like that for me. Though at the same time mutants are genuinely dangerous. There just punk ass kids given grate power with no responsibility and on top of that a lot of mutations are hella deformity's or disability's. Like there's a guy in the background here who's like a 1950s B movie blob monster. That cant be fun. Like not all mutants can be as lucky as the mostly glam as fuck x-men. Though I will relent here and say the very idea of a cure for mutants is controversial because of all the persecuted minority's mutants represent in that its not so much a cure for having super powers in that its a cure for who your and what you represent. So in the end Its a pretty good bad idea.

So once again it might not sound like I enjoyed this wee comic. I totes did likes. It was a fast wee read. Readable almost And I bloody loved the the art. A cracking flash back to early 2000s anime inspired art. Magical likes. Weirdly I get the feeling that particular art style still continues to this day in certain corners of x men comics. Cool likes. I didn't know I missed it but this comic made me relies I did. Well played comic. Well played.

Comic book quickies

SAGA #12

written by brian k. vaughan art by fiona staples

The single best episode of meet the author ever ! Well maybe except for that one issue of animal man with big grant Morrison. Saga there. Just cutting about. Being amazing again. No surprise really. It is saga we're dealing with after all. Its strange. Its only been in my life a short while. But its hard to Imagen comics without saga any more. That's something for me to think about. I here this issue generated some amount of controversy. Don't really see it my self. Last issue was amazingly more explicit. Oh wells. Maybe that's a part of the controversy. Apart from that it just a very bantery issue, like cover to cover banter. Little bit of fighting here and there. But mostly its banter. In lesser hands that could have led to disaster. But of course that's not the case here. There's like a squirely medic / mouse thing and a Cyclops man. Its pretty rad. Has to be said. Damn you saga ! Your just so damn good I don't really have much to talk about. I know I say that about a lot of stuff. But saga likes. It really is that way. Course you already know that. You read comics therefore you read saga. Or do I have that wrong. I have herd rumours of possible spots of resistance. Hmm. Ill have to send the storm troopers to investigate. Stay tuned.

THE STANDARD #2

written by john lees art by john rector

Now this was cracking. I liked this second issue a lot more than the first one. Maybe that's because we got to hang about with auld man standard. Now I liked kid standard. Booster gold that he was, its just that I was sold on auld man super hero cutting about and with this issue we finally got that. And I have to say. It was done pretty well. Like it could have been hateful. It could have been aww auld people are terrible and made fun of them. But no. auld man standard is quite the lad and he's handled with dignity. The wee authors note at the back of the first issue talked about not wanting to be grim dark and that shines threw more here. Auld man standard could have easily been a joke. About how ageing destroys you. About the loss of innocence and all that pish. Amazingly though. Genuinely not the case here. That really makes me happy loikes. Its nice to see ladness spreading from my home land. The art seemed to be upgraded just a little bit. Maybe its just me. But it seemed a little a sharper. Less amiutureishh. Maybe that's a little pretentious for me to say. But this time the art did seam to be improving. I like it ok ! If you fancy a wee bit of indi superhero action the standards your man !

AGE OF ULTRON BOOK #5

written by brian michael bendis art by bryan hitch

So guys. Like still. How can I say this again. Yeah. Still not buying this whole ultron thing. I here terrible terrible things said about it almost non stop. I can totes get that. Its been fairly horrible so far if we're being honest. I really should be one of the people complaining about it. Here's the thing though. It just dosent bother me all that much. Like if this was the actual marvel universe id be actually fuming. But for now its just a wee alternate time line. Now yes. What with the timey whimey developments of this issue and the spoilery covers for upcoming issues there is room for this wee abomination to become very very real. And when that day comes you can be damn sure ill be out there on the streets screaming and weeping. But right now. No matter how much it should offend me. It just dosent. So bendis right. The actual fuck were you on when you were wrighting this. Like I can get going for grim dark ware everyone dies like punks. But come on son. This isn't even good grim dark. I might go as far to call it sloppy. It feels like a bad tv show. Made for the syfy channel. Yes there's spectical but it also feels somewhat cheap. And FUCKING everyone's out of character to some degree. Something that once again would have me rageing. But dosent. So once again. Lets wait and see. Easy dose it. Easy dose it. The marvel lads MIGHT be going some ware with this event. But if they don't. Holy fuck why ?

UNCANNY AVENGERS #6

written by remender art by daniel acuna

BOOOOM oh mah god oh mah gawd ho my actual cracker eating god. This was BLOODY fantastic. Cover to cover a joy to read. A real sight to behold. So its a flash back issue to the days of kid thor. Well young man thor. Lad thor lets call him. I here the main thor book has this time of thors life pretty well down but it was nice to see it presented so AMZINGLY in a avengers book. So lad thors cutting about with the Vikings and that while kang stirs up shite with apocalypse. Its. Magical. Again I cried a little. Partly because I wasn't expecting it to be all that amazing and partly because it was just that god damn solid. Maybe its just a novelty to me. But apocalypse just cutting about in a tavern and beating the shite out of thor is perfect. It probably be my moment of the week. That is if fantastic four wasn't out. More on that bellow. Thor also pulls off one of my all time favourite tropes. The big damn heroes moment. FOR LONDON. The gods have not abandoned us indeed. It just has fucking everything ! I really can say more than that. Also. The art. gorgeous man. I feel like the artist did some issues for bendis late in his avengers run. I was having some flash backs to pink hulk super adaptoid norman ozborn. Not necessarily a bad thing Ill have you know.

FANTASTIC FOUR #6

written by matt fraction art by mark bagley

Let us for a moment consider the extreme ladness of ben grimm. The thing. If I was pushed for my top 5 marvel characters. The thing would defiantly be up there. The sheer absolute ladness he generates is the stuff of legend. The saga of ben grimm should be taught to our young. From their earliest days they should be taught about his amazing adventures and his continuing ladness in the face of the universes dickery. Yes he's a monster. A hulking rock man. So fucking what. At no point dose he let that stop him from cutting about. Making scooby doo sandwiches. Watching tv. And pulling off kamina level fuck destiny shite like he dose this issue. Gotta give even more credit to fraction here. You got me you hipster bastard. You really did. All issue the thing is set up for a fall. The recap blurb reminds us he's been having anger problems. Hulking out into lava thing. We open on him fumbling with asprens. But he holds it together. By the end though. Dose he fall ? DOSE HE FUCK. The four are cutting about the big bang. See a guy strapped to a rock floating threw pre existence. The debate helping the guy. Sues aww like what do you think about this ben. But ben. Bens already outside. Gonna help the guy. WE'R THE FANTASTIC FOUR SUZIE PANTS. WE DONT JUST LET NOBODY DIE. THESE ARE THINGS BEN GRIMM SAYS. I really canny stress it enough. This may be my top moment of there year so far. And if you've been following me recently you'll know I think very highly about the quality of current comics. So that's gotta tell you something about this amazing scean. So ayes. You goota read this book !

BATMAN #19

written by scott snyder art by greg capullo

Well likes. This was batman. Being batman. I canny man. I just canny likes. Argue with that I mean. Those of you with long memorys will ken I really hate when batman isn't being batman. Now yes I do go on about the bat god a lot. Maybe too much. That's fine. I can deal with that. But stuff like the first volume of hush. Really gets my goat. When I read a batman comic I want to see batman being batman. Doing batmanny things. Like cutting about gotham. Paunching folk. Driving about in the batmobile. We don't get a hole lot of that here but It gets across that vibe quite nicely. Its bizarrely fresh. Sharp and crisp. That or iv gone quite mad. Its better than last issue. That's possibly what I'm trying to get at here. Ware last issue felt terribly fan ficy this one felt properly batman. There's a bizarre cold open. Yes. Probably clay face related. Or a subversion of clay face related shite. So really its all good in the hood. Or should I say cowl ! Ho ho ho ! I'll be quite now.

SUPERBOY #19

written by scott lobdell art by r.b silva

See this. This might be they single most un laddshishly hateful comic iv ever read. Now. That may be amazingly harsh. And I'm sorry for that. But deer e o me. What the hell guys. Just like. Its hard for me to describe to you. I wouldn't call it conventionally hateful. Its not like anything remarkably annoying happens. Its just all kinds of blughrg. Likes. Likes. likes. I'm trying to focus on the content of the actual issue right now. But I cant. MY MIND WONT LET ME. It dosent want me to remember any of it. Now don't get me wrong. It wasn't bad bad. Just dark agey in its plot. So much irrelevant shit happens. So many justification's and motivations that you meant to take on board but your like. Naw. Fuck that son. So at some point in the future the meta humans go to war with normal humans. Just naw. I'm not having that. That's cunty writing. That's something a writer from the mid 2000s would come up with. Superman wouldn't allow that. And if he's dead then his descendants wouldn't allow that. LADNESS itself wouldn't allow that to happen. So yeah. Don't go out of your way to read this comic because iv made it out to be terribly bad. Its not actually aw that. Its just weirdly offensive to my sensibility's. Sometimes I wonder if I should mellow out more when reading suprerboy. I'm not saying I should turn my brain off. Just look at it from a different angle. Up there I complained about it being dark agey. I like they 90s loikes. From time to time I like 90s comics. Maybe that's what there shooting for with superboy. I dunno man. Sometimes I just don't understand this crazy mixed up world any more.

Comic book quickies

This weeks quickies aren't as late as you think. Thanks to the easter weekend we didn't get comics until Friday. Gosh darn Friday ! Weels. Canny really complain. It certainly adds to the event vibe.

THE SUPERIOR SPIDER-MAN #7

written by dan slott art by humberto ramos

Hmmm. What happened this issue. Nothing. Well that's a big smelly lie. Things did happen. Important things I'm sure. But vibe wise. Noting really all that crazy. Like big dock ock dosent kill any fools. I don't think anyway. It certainly feels like he just wants to kill every god damn fool in existence. I could be very wrong but was the doc always like that ? Yes he's a villain and a bad man. But is he a mad dog killer ? I dunno man. It just dosent sit right with me. Now to be fair. The avengers do lad up this issue and finely call ock spidy up for his shite. Its about time really. As iv said before. The doc REALLY hasn't been trying to hide the fact he's taken over petes body. Its a wonder its taken this long for even the avengers to notice. And that's ware the issue ends. A cliff hanger for the fight with the avengers. What happened to me man. Im slightly down on this issue. Perhaps I'm slightly fed up of ock spidy already. Is this slott fatigue ? No slotts skills are as killer as ever. It must just be my souls on the blink. So ayes. A slight lull in the cracking ness but don't quote me on that. I may just be going a tiny bit mad.

ALL NEW X MEN #1O

written by brian michael bendis art by stuart immonen

Oooh the contrast likes. Between all new x men and age of ultron that is. See are the core of all new x men it feels right. Like there are a million liitle things that make up its amazingness. But at its core it just feels right. Age of ultron ? Just dosny. I don't know man. Maybe big bendis was in a bad place when he wrote it 2 years ago. Or maybe he was just feeling particularly evil. Who knows. ALL NEW X MEN THOUGH bloody marvels stuff. See that auld mad Cyclops. You can really count on that bastard to really deliver on the crazy. Bam just turns up. Spews insanity on EVERYTHING. Then just assumes people will think hes in the right. Again I goota say. He's the most hateful bastard to ever live and damn entertaining because of it. a little more swagger and a little less crazy and Cyclops could approach kabi levels of arrogant ladness. Bam still wont accept he was responsible for killing prof x despite being entirely responsible for killing prof x. it scares me that there's probably people out there that are on his side. I call theses people anti lads.

AGE OF ULTRON BOOK 4

written by brian michael bendis art by bryan hitch

Son. Come here. Take a knee. Right. See age of ultron. See like. The whole entire thing so far ? Yeah. I'm still not buying it. Now let me be clear. When I say not buying it. I mean I don't buy the the actual events of the comic. Not that I don't physically buy a copy of the comic itself. That would be mad. Ted. So everyone's just dieing like punks. Yes that kinda sort of fits the the dystopian tone of what there going for. But come on son. Big she hulk gets wasp stinged to death. Naw loikes. Ulton mooks arny freiza likes. They canny do the death death beam. Its aww just a bit sad really. Folk just diny get to be awesome. Aww in a bid to big up ultron. And like I keep saying. I just don't buy it. Big luke cage died too. Cant make up my mind which death was more disappointing/ insulting. I guess cage would win out seeing as his death happened off panel. Off panel. IN THIS DAY AND AGE. God damn it likes. Now there is justification. That emma frost can read his mind from off panel and he must have been aww charred up from surviving that nukeular blast. Another me would call that niffty. Goota say though. I don't think anyone should die alone. Even if he didn't want to be seen aww broken up and that. At the very least cap shid have went to his side. Fuck. If it works out they themselves don't burrie cage. I might not know how to cope. Aye. So age of ultron. Its like a more depressing flashpoint but without lad commander Thomas Wayne. That might not be that bad a thing to be. It COULD get better. I here it might be going some ware. Lets wait and see shall we.

MASKS # 5

written by chris roberson art by dennis calero

Got to give credit ware credits due loikes. To the writers and that. Basically big zoro is spot on. Every thing I could want from him cutting about. So really no matter what happens in the narrative from here on in I really cant complain about it. Big zoro is a absolute lad. All is right with the world. So much like last time we talking about mask I still really quite dig it. Maybe that's not everyone's experience. It could just be the novelty factor for me. Iv not read that much of dynamites noire output. Well maybe one or two green hornets when the seath rogan film came out. But that's about it really. So its possible masks anint all that fantastic to you's all. Shame if that's true cause god damn. Its quite rocking. Its sort of undersatedly prefect. Like its a fantatic read but its no gonna change the world if you get me. Every things played so straight but with enough of a nod and wink for it to get by. Ayes you could probs throw the age auld too many characters complaint at it. But ken what pal. Its fine. The amount of characters is just fine. And if I might add. Dandy. Bit of a mystery building to. Quite appropriate considering the whole detective hero crew the super lads have put together. Though I do fear that when the big bad is revealed he or she will be somebody that we're meant to know and I wont get the reference. Yes. I still bring shame to my family with my lack of auld comic knowledge I must train harder !

GREEN ARROW #19

written by jeff lemire art by andrea sorrentino

Have I mentioned how amazingly metal gear green arrow is right now. Because damn son. It just amazingly is. Now that in its self is a damn magical thing. Beautiful almost. But green arrow isn't satisfied with just being the most metal gear comic on the shelves, no. no at all. This issue busted out some cutting edge shonnen vibe. Now not necessary the most shonneny tropes but shonnen tropes non the less. What I mean is we get a lot of green arrow being amazingly outclassed by fucking everyone. Like he him self says. He got beat up by a little girl. Hell of a vibe. Really. I'm genuinely surprised to be reading a green arrow comic. I don't think I can get over the sock. Its fallen into the category of comics that I really don't have much to say about because there just so damn well made. Really every single panel in this book is a absolute joy to look at. Well maybe that's a bit much. Maybe it really just is the sheer metal gearness. We do indeed get a triumphant reprise of arrow ? Arrow ? ARROW? Mmm that's sweet likes.

GREEN LANTERN #19

written by geoff johns art by ardian syaf and szymon kudranski

Suicide ! Hasny worked ! Yet ! It takes hal the whole god damn issue to jump off that god damn cliff. It was the most modern god damn example of pacing in comics iv ever god damn seen. See when the first thing hal didn't do was jump off the cliff and become a black lantern. I was aww like. Really goff ? Its gooning to be like that is it ? Your going to squeeze in an issue of filler here ? Yes. Yes he did. To be fair. Fillers the wrong thing to call it. Things did indeed happen. Sinestros home planet was destroyed. Like hella causally. I think. The first lanterns aww aboot the reality warping. I just assumed it was alternate future stuff happening. BUT then the dead from that planet started falling into the death zone. Which I assume remains un effected by the first lantern. So I don't know man. Big stuff is happening and that. But it dosent feel like it. The events sort of lack paunch. Its hard to describe really. I guess this must be a bit what an x men fan feels like. Lurching from one event to another. Oh proper x men fans. You mad cunts.

ACTION COMICS # 19

written by andy diggle art by tony s daniel

Diglett dig diglett dig trio trio trio ! I feel that's all I need to say on the matter ! Really ? You want more ? Sometimes internet folk can be bastards. So yes. This was absolutely cracking. Which is like the biggest god damn shame. Really it is. Andy diggle wrote this one issue and this one issue only. Which is quite the bummer. From what I'm able to take from this issue he really quite got superman. That's slightly somewhat a rear thing this these days. To often to writers cut about calling him sort of nazi. These writers of course were born before the invention of laddnes. Spawn of the moore devil they are. Basically not to be trusted. This issue pretty much had everything you could want. It had clark and lois bantering, super man flying about like super man, lex louthor being the most arrogant bastard on the planet who isn't doctor doom and in a nice touch, GIANT MECHA. Yes if there's any sure fire way to get me to like your comic its stick a bunch of giant robots in it for your hero to paunch the fuck up. Supergirls writers get it. Ill go out on a limb here and say putting giant robots in your comic id the most important factor in comic making. Ayes. Even more important than banter. So ayes. Its a hell of a shame diggle had to leave. Not really sure what his reasons were. But ill miss this superman run that never was.

DETECTIVE COMICS # 19

written by john layman and james tynon iv art by jason fabok, andy clarke , henrik jonsson, jasson masters , mikel jannin

Here's the thing. I totally forgot this was a thing. Shame on me. It has to be said. Well ladies and gents. Here it is. Detective comics # 900 ! and it was fine. Not too shabby if you ask me. It could have sucked but amazingly like I say. It was fine. Do you actually care ? That's the real question. Probably not is thing. Cant really say that's a bad thing. Its not the most eventy event comic out there. Despite what it is. Its not a bad comic. Not by any means. I really enjoyed it. That's probably because its just a regular issue of detective comics but with extra flashy bits. And see those flashy bits. Not that flashy. The regular story is quite fun though. But at this point that is to be expected. Laymans detective comics has been generating quite the vibe. Awesome, gritty and more than a tad silly. Its a potent combo. The main plot is the introduction of man bat into the new 52. I think. Most of what I know about man bat comes from the ultra amazing first episode of the 90s batman cartoon and I just assumed man bat existed in this current batmans back story. You know. What with talia all ghuls army of man bats. But what ever. It was quite a nice wee done in one zombie ish plague plot. Oh my god. I almost forgot. We get some wee bits with the bat family. Hoo lee fuck. There such giant irredeemable bastards its almost comical. Fall out from the death of the family stuff. Bastards like. Utter bastards.

Comic Book Quickies: Oh god Its April

FF # 5

written by matt fraction art by michael allred

How fun is this run ? Amazingly fun. That's my thoughts on ff. When I talk about it with the lads I'm like did you read ff ? And there like aye. And I'm like. Its still fun like ! The source of that fun comes from its modern age comic wearing the skin of a silver age comic ness. Now there's plenty of books out there that do the silver age vibe quite well. Sometimes though there compromised by the sliver ages oddness. That might sound quite wrong. You'd think you'd be aiming for oddness with a comic that's going for the silver age tone. Well ayes. You are. Sometimes that oddness gets in the way of awesomeness is the thing. And no matter what. That's a terrible thing to be. So thankfully ff avoids that trap quite nicely. Well. It did avoid it. Until this issue. Things got a little too bizarre. No. not too bizarre. Bizarre isn't necessary bad. Things just felt a little unexplained. A little not all together and as polished as previous issues. That's fine though. I'm sure things will be explained down the road at some point. Plot wise. Auld man johnny storm has gone quite mad ted. Fair play to him. He's auld. If I was auld I would probably go quite mad ted too. Medusa though. She's ALSO gone quite mad ted. Only thing is she hasn't got the being auld excuse. Ayes I guess she was a villain back in the day. Again its one of those things that will be explained down the road. It just comes off more than a little wtf at the moment. Now don't get me wrong. I'm not really complaining about things not being fully explained. I know thats no the vibe fractions going for. Its just a wee nit pick is all. Still a damn cracking read. id Possibly recommend it to folk just getting into comics. Its got that classic marvel Kirby swagger with modern writing flash !

AGE OF ULTRON BOOK 3

written by brian michael bendis art by bryan hitch

The sheer still not buying it of ultron. By the way. Seriously. Loikes. Ultron being this big bad romping stomping all conquering robit. Naw likes ? Like fair play. Its an event. You can big up whoever the fuck you want to be your big bad. I understand that. Like I can totes get it. Like maybe one day marvel will big up Howard the duck as the new world conqueror. Its fine. Its just one of those things. They did it last year with the phoenix. Now that fire bird was way bigged up. It shouldn't have been that over powered. Thing is I bought it. The phoenix is cosmicy enough to have room to big it up in that way. Ultron though. I just don't buy it. Fuck knows why actually. I'm all about robots. Robots are way cool. I'm fine with robots cutting about being god level bastards. Super robots are basically my soul. Its just ultron. I just don't believe he could take the ENTIRE marvel universe. Not for a god damn second. Now again to be fair spoilery developments in this issue make it some want debatable if its actually ultron that's been starting shite. So maybe all this wont actually be an issue. Yes. Issue ! This issue was OK ! Kinda ! Well it was really more of the same. Lets me see if I can sum up the vibe of this event so far with a wee moment from this issue. Black panther dies by falling down some stairs. Guy survives the apocalypse. Dies falling down some stairs. Yeah. That's basically age of ultron on a nut shell. Everyone's lost there plot armour. Or more accurately there ongoing universe armour. I get the feeling we're going to see a lot more folk die like punks before this is all over.

UNCANNY AVENGERS #5

written by rick remender art by olivier coipel

Wellity wellity, now here's a thing. Wasny expecting this. Its a new arc ayes. but damn son. Hella first issue vibe right here. I guess we can think of the first arc as the zero arc. And a vs x as the minus one arc. I liked it I really did. Just wasn't expecting it is all. It may make the first trade awkward and or short. Hella sunny issue though. Has to be said. Its nice the creators get that. Wonderman likes. He's still not over his shite. It sad to see really. Back at the end of bendis run he suddenly ladded up and stopped being a bastard. It was rushed and not well explained. You know what. Nobody cared. Ladness is ladness likes. Shidny let logic get in the way of it. Not at all likes. Apart from that almost everything ell's was pretty fine. Plenty of action mixed with nifty banter. And the wasp is on the team ! Yay ! I like the wasp. Mainly because of the avengers cartoon aye and its true the actual wasp can be quite the mental. Never know man. She could be fun here. Maybe. Hopefully.

BATMAN INC #9

written by grant morrison art by chris burnham and jason masters

Here we go ! The bat god UNLEASHED ! MY OH MY. THERE YOU WERE ! Just sitting there. Being a hipster bastard. Likening scott snyders batman. Thinking its the one and only. The boom ! Morrison explodes back on to the scene. Then you remember. He never went away. Your mind has just been clouded by this generations sickness. I pity you I really do. Gid comics likes. Gid comic. While this issue did have plenty of action it really was more a transnational issue. Transitioning from batman finding out demean was dead to batman fully hulking out into the unstoppable bat god. That's fine and dandy likes. Hopefully the next few issues will just be bats soloing the world. All as it should be. David cameroon makes an appearance this issue. Bizarrely. Not really sure how to react to it. What with him being written surprisingly laddishly. Still not really accepting deimans death. It just dosent feel any kind of right to me. Wells. I guess we just have sit about and see how things go. Still. Big batman inc. bloody good comic booking.

AQUAMAN #18

written by geoff johns art by paul pelletier

What's the deal with Atlantis ? Is everyone from there a bastard ? Short answer. yes. Long answer. Yes. Every single atalntian is a bit of a cunt. Even aquaman himself is quite the grumpy bear. Its a real shame. Yeah I still morn the loss of what could have been. With the full retcon of the new 52 we could have had big brave and the bold aquaman cutting about the proper dc u. being a ultra lad. Now aye. That's not a new complaint of mine. Your probably sick of me going on about it by now. Really. I bring it up again because aquaman is now king of Atlantis again. And see Atlantis. Its like waaaay drab. Its meant to be the fantastically amazing undersea kingdom. Its quite shite though. Like its all very drab and un appealing. And all the population are to a man. Cunts. Like everyone is just horrible. Not really sure what the goff is trying to say here. Foreign people are terrible ? Fish men aren't lads ? Don't trust those who ware sea shells are clothes ? That really dosent seem like something big Mr Saturday morning cartoon would normally write about. Genuinely don't know what's up with Atlantis. Its meant to be this big thing. That this mystical city actually exists. But know one cares. Because its shite.

THE FLASH #18

written for brian buccellato art by marcio takara

Big Barry Allan. Big Barry Allan the god king of humanity. Big Barry Allan the god king of humanity IS BEING A BAR TENDER AGAIN. Yes ! This is his second ever shift ! Yass likes. The world is just that little bit better now. Like I'm pretty sure barrys ladness just made the weather better here. Really cracking issue too. Which was a little surprising considering it wasn't written by big francis manapul and instead by the other co writer on the book. Hopefully manapul isny off the book forever. But I dunno guy. I could totes be fine with buccellato deaing a wee run. His banter was quite enjoyable. I'm glad likes. It could be cause for much tears. But its no ! So happy days there. It was a nice wee issue all right. For a moment there I was going to say it was self contained all done in one. But that's a lie. It dose give out that vibe though. Sort of breathery but not really. Ayes its a damn strange beast. Defiantly not complaining though. Its still damn good flash. Really I'm quite happy to be reading the flash. He's just one of them amazingly super heroy super hero's. And this is quite a key point. Not a bastard. Remember that folks. Big Barry Allan isn't a bastard !

TEEN TITANS #18

written by scott lobdell art by eddy barrows and rodney buchemi

So. this wasnny all that bad. As much as that pains me to say. Ayes. That's really the core evil of this book. As iv said many a god damn time before. Teen titans is one of those books I should damn well drop. But I cant. Half due to my own madness and half due to it sometimes being pretty rocking. Damn ! Now this issue wasn't that rocking. The horrible thing is. It wasn't all that bad either. Its really quite worrying. So this issue was kinda sorta a requiem issue. Kinda sorta in that lasted about four pages. Basically tim drake is quite the bastard. I think we all knew that likes. Yes maybe there's some sort of devil in him. Somehow he's made me not care in the slightest The rest of the issue wasnny bad though. Nothing utterly hateful happened. I don't think so anyway. Pretty standard stuff really but with just enough banter to keep it going. So ayes. Teen titans. Its fairly all right. Except when it isn't.

comic book quickies: its still march !

Fairly light week all in all. Took me by surprise it did. Still batman was out. That always makes it a solid week. OR DOSE IT. READ ON !

BATMAN #18

written by scott snyder art by andy kubert

Uuuuurrrhgh. Your going to hate me like. Canny be helped. I didn't think this issue was all that gid. Now calm doon. It wasny pish or anything. I just didny personally like it all that much. Its aww about them bastards. What's there faces. Canny mind there names. Like I could check. I have the comic right here. Kinda my point though. I don't care about theses characters. Its that brother and sister team from earlier in the run. Dave and not dave ill call them. Not dave is the one who saved batman after he escaped the court of owls maze thingy. You can already see why I don't like her. Both of them feel VERY fan ficy. There young and cool. Actual bastards. We get some back story on there bastard dad. Don't care. Just don't care. Now big batman himself is in the issue. Going a wee bit mad. Damien is apparently actually dead and bats taking his rage out on street punks. The main driving point of the story is bats isny sleeping and he's going to get himself killed if he dosent stop. I don't buy it. I feel like even though his son is dead batman wid be more controlled. Ayes he can go berserk but its only his son and really. Its kinda sucky that there going with the whole genre blind thing. When bats “died” at the end of final crisis did the bat family actually think he was dead ? DID THEY FUCK. I just feel the bat god should be aware of comic book death. Secondly. Get himself killed ? After a week of fighting street punks ? Get tea fuck. This is a batman were talking about. He is a god. He can do anything. Now ayes. New universe and younger batman. But come on folks. That's just weak. Thirdly ! Its not dave that snaps bats out of his funk. You see ware the fan ficky ness comes in now ? Now yes I will say not dave brings up some decent points. I cant really fault what she has to say. Its just coming from her it like a slap in the face. She's just some person. A bloody mortal. Some mook off the street. This issue dose have a pretty niffty fight with a venom infused dog. So it evens out in the end. Heh.

SUPERBOY #18

written by scott lobdell and tom defalco AND tony lee art by r.b silva and iban coello

Come on now superboy. Could you for one issue STOP with the god damn exposition dump intro. For god damn fuck sake. We KNOW your a living weapon. You TELL us that every SINGLE issue. Its driving me INSANE. I just cant take it any more. I kid. Its only a wee nit pick of mine. And who am I to complain about repetition. Likes. Superboy by the way. Its all right. like iv said before. Its no mind blowing and it defiantly has its up and downs. I should drop it. I cant though. I just cant ! Because madness. Also some issues I do quite enjoy. Like this one. It was pretty fun. I dunno why man. Maybe it just appealed to my monster of the week sensibility's. Its a sort of journey to centre on the mind plot. Superboys mind that is. That is some guy like accidentally then on purpose invades superboys mind. I say some guy. Its Dr pycho. No idea if he's new or not. Totes could be for all I know. I'm sorry my lack of DC continuity shames both me and my family. So the he'l on earth arc ended. I assume it went well. I don't get superman you see. Earth looks ok though. So alls well. Big lex luthor appearers at the very end here so maybe the book will be going somewhere at some point. Cools like. Its not like superboys been aww that meaningful a book up to now. Ill keep reading. Maybe it will get consistent at some point. Hopefully !

FANTASTIC FOUR #5

written by matt fraction art by mark bagley

See this pals. This right here. This actual comic. This is a episode of Dr who. Don't know what ell's to say. Just every single thing about it was Dr who ish. Like trope for trope guys. Its very much a time traveller messing with time story. This time it was accidental which was nifty. We even get a nice fillery money shot monster fight. Noice loikes. The fantastic four themselves are pretty un shocked by the weirdness of the other time traveller and his exploits. Fair play likes. They ARE the fantastic four after all. No matter what. Thieve ALLWAYS weirder shite. I quite like that running joke about them. I am likening this run. Its pretty much basic domestic FF nes. That's cool likes. That's pretty much what the four should be about. We do have the added benefit that its a road trip threw time and space. It could do with more Hawaiian shirts in my opinion though. Sues still the most hateful being in existence. Iv come to expect that. its just her thing. Aye reed kept A secret from you. CALM THE FUCK DOON. He's a bastard. You know this. And its no like sues the pinnacle of human morality. Big namor anybody ? So aye. Damn fine comic booking ! I do like it really ! Despite the horrible things I say !

AGE OF ULTRON BOOK TWO

written by brain michael bendis art by bryan hitch

Well this was a surprise. Genuinely didn't ken this was going to be a weekly thing. It is a weekly thing right ? Hella awesome stuff there marvel. Ayes they might have had this sitting for two or so years. But damn son. You canny beat momentum. Its just the best likes. Ayes. It will be expensive. But come on pals. EVENT MOMENTUM. its still very pretty likes. Ayes I guess that's the main selling point here. Big hitch is doing a bang up job. Cant fault it. Wells. I can. Though its probably just a nit pick. The book reads fast. If you get me. You start it and boom. Its done. Its just not very dense. I noticed it in the first issue but I thought id wait and see how things went before bringing it up. Maybe we've just been spoiled by big dan slott and his ultra dense spidy story's. Ayes. That might just be it. Plot wise this issue was fine. Weirdly about the black widow and moon night. Guh. Likes. They were cutting about nick fury's secret underground barber shop thaw. Always awesome when that pops up. Peter parker slept threw the apocalypse. Ayes. Bendis. Ill give you that. That was a nice touch. Still not buying ultron is capable of aww this shite. Really. I ask you. Evil robot invades and conquers earth. THE fuck is big DOOM at. Cant Imagen he'd stand for any of ultrons shite. Like not at all. The issue did have one highly enjoyable moment to be fair. CAPTAIN AMERICAS BACK ON HIS FEET. Safe to say. My expectation are high for the next ish.

comic book quickies 23/7/12

BLUE BEETLE #11

written by Tony Bedard art by Ig Guara

Its all right. Its weird likes. I really shouldn't have liked this issue but for reasons I quite lock down I quite like it. The book really is doing the third beetle a big injustice. Big jamie on the run from home living ruff on the streets of new york really shouldn't be what this books all about. But it is. And I don't mind as much as I should. Its probably because its not offensively or even boringly bad. Just not hitting the right vibe bad. Booster gold put in an appearance this moth. Yaaaaaaaaaaaaaay ! Sadly its to fight the beetle and not be bros or buddy cops like they should though I should say it dose look like there's still room for that to happen. You see what I mean about missing the vibe ? Seeing booster on the cover this issue gets you thing aye ! Booster will show up and sport Jamie's shite out even just a wee bit. But naw boosters just adds to the beetles problems. Still I go to give them credit for sticking with this whole narrative direction you get a lot of points for stick with it ness from me.

SUPER GIRL #11

written by Michael Green and Mike Johnson art by Mahmud Asrar

Iv said it quite a few times this past year. Super girl is god damn AMAZING. She just wont stop punching dudes. That's a pretty simple thing I knows but you'd be surprised by how menny comics just fly by without nary a single punch being thrown. Comics ware theses nothing but endless talking and DRAMA. Now don't get me wrong not every comic ever should be wall to wall fisty cuffs. Just most of them. So like iv said many times before supergirls one of those books. Aye sure there is plot happening and there are characters wandering aboot that plot which is nice to see but the book knows what its aboot. FIGHTING. That's really grand to see theses days. Right now supergirl herself isn't the greatest of character and really needs to settle in and talk things out with superman. But she's getting there.

JUSTICE LEAGUE #11

written by geoff johns art by jim lee

Still not digging the league. This arcs been just a wee bit pish really. Things happen and I'm like so what ? The books not really had any meaty meat to it since darksides defeat. Honestly I couldn't tell you this arcs villains name. Thieve got all the big guns on board and not doing anything with them. I'm not expecting massive revelations and wham moments every issue but I was sort of expecting consistent epicness. Cyborg exists. I noticed that this month. dosent do much elles. Which is a shame what with him being the wild card on the team. He's a cool guy and a want to see him justifie his place on the team. But naw he's just the leagues teloporter. The book still has the banter at least which should be half the battle but I'm just not getting the books vibe. They did that silly hero vs hero fight when emotions run hight thing. Do people like that ? I always thought that was bad writing. Well nah that's too harsh more like writing from another age. That's fair enough if your writing a throw back styled book and I know the the big goffs a silver age lad but I doubt that's what he's going for here.

AVENGERS VS X-MEN #8

written by team marvel art by Adam Kubert

I don't know what the actual word on the street is but I get the terrible feeling that were slowly spiralling towards mutant victory. That's pretty sickening to me. See its been a fun read so far but a vs x has made me fairly anti mutant. I'm pretty sure that's not what forty plus years x books have been shooting for. This was namors big day out issue and it went quite well I think. He gets both the phoenix and the shite kicked out of him. I like namor. He's a bastard. But a fun bastard. Most of the time. You cant deny that he forms a damn fine buddy cop team with Dr doom. Aye so a vs x has been a load of fun despite the shilling of the x-men its just going to interesting to see if marvels as mental as they look.

comic book quickies 30/5/12

AMERICA'S GOT POWERS #2

written by jonathan ross art by bryan hitch

This second issue has less fighting and more plot development as well as more time spent on the back story of the world. We learn that super powers have turned ever non powered person in the world into a god damn Nazi. Maybe there just being overly American. Its hard to tell. Amazingly the hero Tommy is still a pretty cool guy and is even aware that he could become a bastard because of the type of world that he lives in. the nature of the actual Americas got powers tv show is pretty damn grim and this issue really dosent hold back on this as we get a montage of injuries and deaths the show inflicts on these super powered young people. So that's all fairly grim but the end of the issue reveals that those with super powers in this universe cant truly die and can even heal there injuries. So yeah that's kinda cool. I did enjoy this issue but the nature of the show was a real downer but the reveal that ever ones fine was sort of a pick me up. Its still fairly grim that these super people are put through horrible events for nothing and when they lose there imprisoned for what could be forever. Americas got powers continues to surprise me with how much I'm enjoying it. We're two issues in and the main hero isn't a bastard. Id call that a win.

THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN ANNUAL #39

written by Briann reed art by lee garbett

This. Was. Grate. Its a wonderful life plot in reverse and with spider-man. So the world would be a much better place if peter Parker never existed. Norman Osborn invents the cure for cancer. Norman the god damn Osborn invents the god damn cure for god damn cancer. Aye. In a world ware there's no spider-man for him to go loopy over Norman Osborn invents the cure for cancer. Not reed Richards. Not Tony stark. Not even hank Pym. Norman Osborn. NORMAN OSBORN. Oh wells this was a damn gid read with a fine mix of comedy and heart. Basically uncle Ben is a lad. He's still a live in this new time line but he knows he'll die if he helps peter put things back the way there meant to be but he like you gotta go live peter. Why ? Because I'm a lad that's why. The main point this book is trying to hammer home is that the world is probably better off without spider-man but peters friends are much better off with him in the world. Yeah id rather have the cure for cancer. Its all silly though. Spider-man has saved the world a thousand times over and and if he never existed at all there'd probably be not much left of the world by this point. A damn fine comic that's well worth a read.

BATMAN ANNUAL #1

written by scott snyder art by james tynion

Well this was depressing. Is that the point of Mr freeze story's ? I haven't read enough in continuity freeze storeys to know. Well this issue was all about him. Well it was all about this new version of Mr freeze for this new universe. Gotta say I don't like this new version all that much. He's just a crazy bastard. I get that to tangle with batman on a regular basis you've got to be pretty out of your nut but this Mr freeze is just a little off for me. Spoilers but this new ice guys wife isn't really his wife and is just some random woman that was frozen back in the 1940s that freeze is obsessed with. Ok so it was a cool reveal and a new take on and old story. Fair enough. But isn't that point of Mr freeze that he's a tragic villain doing criminal acts to save the woman he genuinely loves ? Isn't he meant to be less insane than your regular bat bad guy ? Isn't he meant to know on some level what he's doing is wrong but is blinded to reality by genuine love ? Isn't that what's cool and different about him that makes him an interesting character ? Well maybe this version is more appropriate for a darker batman and might fight in well with that darker rouges gallery but I really don't dig him. Apart from that the annual was pretty gid. Freezes banter with the penguin was entertaining and I was surprised to see the plot tied in with the current night of the owl's arc with freeze giving the owls there regenerating powers. One thing that gets me though is why do prisons and asylums keep super villains costumes and there tech on-site. Isn't that just asking for trouble ? With freeze I can kind of understand why they keep his suit there in case they have to move him but for the love of fuck why don't they keep his stuff in a heated room? Comics man. some times they just get to me.

FF #18

written by Jonathan Hickman art by Nick Dragotta

This was some damn fine comics fun right here. Nothing big and nothing fancy. Just loads of fun. Jonny storm is left in charge of the FF when everybody ell's is off world fixing a kree sun. hilarity ensues. I quite like when anything happens the to the FF the answer is all ways a field trip. Here's no different with Johnny leading the kids on a trip to the negative zone and like I said it was a lot of fun. Its just nice to see johnny being king of the negative zone and its not like he's bumbling his way through. No he is lord and master of the negative zone and the bugs that inhabit the zone treat him as such. Well they did. For like ten pages. The bugs demand free elections and johnny's weirdly cool with that. And then they go ahead and vote for annihilus. Gotta say the bugs were being kind of awesome here. There plan was just to vote there old leader back in. it might work. Its not like johnny storm of the universe famous fantastic four can deny them democracy. So I'm still loving the FF. Now I had my doubts about the book back when the main fantastic four book came back from the dead. I assumed the the FF would become the filler book. Now it kind of has but not really. Its the kids book. Which Is a good thing. This is the is book ware we get to see the foundation being the foundation. Something we didn't get to see during its first fifteen issues or so.

comic book quickies 16.5.12

AVENGERS #26

written by Brain Michael Bendis art by Walter Simonson

Well this wasn't what I was expecting at all. This world man. Its crazy. You go to your friendly neighbourhood comic book shop to pick up a copy of the avengers and what do you get ? A story all about the secret avengers! This world man I'm telling you its totally mental sometimes. Well I suppose its more a noh var spotlight issue so that's cool. We really don't know all that much about the young kree lad, its not like we learn all that much more about him here but whatevers. Now it is sort of weird that captain America sends this avenger team and not to mention his close friend Thor on what he calls a suicide mission. I like to think his reasoning is that Thor died pretty recently and just came back so he probably wont die any time soon.

BLUE BEETLE #9

written by Tony Bedard art by Marcio Takara

Now this was ok. Just ok. It was a slight step up from what we've had from this book recently. So that's something at least. The main problem I have with book is Jamie isn't having fun. The scarab battle suit isn't any fun. The beetle place within the world of the new fifty two isn't any fun. So I'm really not digging this blue beetle on the run arc. Its just not what I want from the character. All DC have to do is have Jamie in some fun super hero adventures where he's a inexperienced rookie. Now they kind of have that going on here with the star kid vibe the first few issues had and you do get the point that Jamie has no idea what he's doing or how to be a hero but there still missing that vitally important fun part.

SUPER GIRL #9

written by Michael Green and Mike Johnson art by Mahmud Asrar

Now this was a damn good comic. Damn good. I'm tempted to say this was the best issue of super girl that iv read since issue one. It was just so darn fun. And as you'd expect from I comic I really liked it did have a lot of fighting. Which is always funky. Now I did think that last issue was a good change of pace breather issue and I did kind of want that to continue. I would have been really happy if supergirl just sat around all issue chilling with her Irish gal pal. Well I guess that wasn't to be. Oh wells wall to wall fighting is just as good. I know a lot of people out there think fighting alone cant carry a comic and I'm willing to concede that's partially true but I have to give credit to this comic its some what interesting fighting. Now its nothing mind blowing but its not like its supergirl spamming one paunch over and over and suer girls powers were going mental and that led to the standard not trying to hurt civilians routine that I'm glad dint take the dark path and have her kill or maim anyone. Yeah so supergirls a kinda sorta solid comic.

JUSTICE LEAGUE #9

written by geoff johns art by jim lee

This was interesting. Not great. But interesting. Really it was just a lot of set up and not very justice league-ish set up at that. Like the last few issues it felt very small. Well not very small but smaller than it should be for the big super star flag ship that it started out as. There was time spent showing that the justice league are people too and that they have there own emotional problems that will most likely pay off further down the line but I dunno man all of the emotional problems felt quite hollow to me. I like to think that by the time they all come together to form the league they'd have all there shit together. Now I know I'm alone in this but I really don't get what the big deal is with jim lees art. Yeah there was points in the first five issues ware I could kind of see what people liked about it but not here. At least when non super powered stuff was happening. The back up story still shows billy batson as being a bastard. Yes I'm sure the big goff lad is building to something and billy probably will get some charter development to become an actually likeable. now yes he dose shown signs of development this issue but right now he's still a bastard. Which is really odd. After flashpoint I'm sure everybody was fine with that version of captain marvel becoming the actual version. Its just weird is all.

AVENGERS VS X-MEN #4

written by team marvel art by jr jr

Sow how powerful is the phoenix force ? Yeah I know it can destroy planets. Big deal galatus dose that every other day. The fantastic four can take galatus so can they take the phoenix ? Well the x-men were able to defeat it back in the day so I'm pretty sure the avengers alone could take it. Yeah I'm saying the x-men suck ass. Deal with it. They make so much the phoenix being this world ending thing but I just cant get into that. I'm my head I see it as just another x-men villain. This issue was sort of terrible. Very little actual fighting going on and yeah there was a lot of one off panels showing fighting happening but there just there to advertise the tie ins. I know that's the done thing for events theses days but I still don't like it. Emma frost trys her hand a narrating this issue and as you'd expect she's just terrible at it. Somehow it still feels like a ninety's anti hero doing the voice over commentary. Now don't get me wrong I love the ninety's as much as the next man buy this was just an odd choice. So big wolverines back on the avengers side by the end of the issue. That makes his fight with captain America last issue totally pointless. Yay marvel !

A VS X THE FIGHTS #2

written by steve mcniven and kieron gillen art by john dell and salvador larroca

Now I suppose I shouldn't complain about the lack of fighting in the main avengers vs x-men book when we have this lovely little title that's all fighting. First up we have captain America vs gambit. Thankfully cap won. Can you imagine if they had written gambit as the winner ? MADNESS. Now don't me wrong I like gambit that lad can totally rock pink but captain America is a living legend and I don't get how someone can get it in there head that they could take him. Second fight is spider-man vs colossus. In latveria. I like how the avengers think hope is hanging out in latveria. It just makes so much sense ! Oh wait no it dosent. Now the fight itself was quit gid as it was basically just spider-man vs the juggernaut and the comic gives the fight to colossus. Naw man. Just naw.

comic book quickies 9/5/12

GREEN LANTERN #9

written by Geoff Johns art by Doug Mahnke

Well this was just lovely. See the main green lantern book can feel a little light on content some times like the past few issues haven't been all that amazing but this for me was like two issues JAMMED together. It was just so loaded with stuff is all with things finally happening. You know like Hal FINALLY catching on to the cold hard fact that the guardians are FUCKING INSANE. We also get a look into sinestro's back story in an attempt to make him more sympathetic which is cool I guess but I get the feeling it wont translate into actual character growth but lets wait and see shall we. Spoilers but the big goff lad really seems to be tearing through his multi lantern corps, first the sinestro corps went down and now it looks like the indigo tribes bit the dust. I really hope they aren't permanent changes as the multi coloured corps are what got me reading green lantern in the first place.

SUPERBOY #9

written by Scott Lobdell and Tom DeFalco art R.B Silva

Well there was a lot going on here this month. Well no that's wrong. There was an actual FUCK TON of characters here and not all that much going on. Now to be fair I am quite enjoying this wee teen super hero event. Why ? Well because of all the fighting ! Yeah its not the best fighting in the world and yeah it is just a tad repetitive in places but its fun and at times aware that it has way too many characters flying around all over the place. It dose do a pretty good job of letting you know who everyone is and what's happening ware so that's cool. Thinking about it the book dose do an actually good job of being the second part of a wee event by having a good balance between fighting and setting up plot points for future story's. Now the art dose start looking a little bit shakey in places but that's forgiveable what with all the charters ever running aboot.

FRANKENSTEIN AGENT OF S.H.A.D.E #9

written by Jeff Lemire art by Alberto Ponticelli

Its Frankenstein vs animal man ! Well not really. Well not actually at all. It's Frankenstein on the hunt for a disappeared animal man and his family. So yeah that's pretty cool. mystery stuff and all that. Now this issue was a LOT of fun. Its got franky being bad ass. And really that's all I ask of this book. There's a few bits this issue ware franky is channelling the god damn bat man and I mean that in the best possible way. The books doing pretty well for being in the shaky waters of post first arc guest star super heroes issues. I'm glad the new fifty twos not being so strict about writing for the trade type comics as it gives us story's like this that don't need five issues and an aftermath to tell.

BATMAN #9

written by Scott Snyder art by Greg Capullo

THIS COMIC ! This god damn comic. I say it every month but its so true. It just gets better and better ! How that's possible at this point I'm not sure. This book just has it all. It kicks things off with batman in power armour. BATMAN IN POWER ARMOUR. Aye just aye. Then it brings out a robot dinosaur AND makes it work without braking the tone of the book. Its also nice to see the court of owls mooks have a wolverine style healing factor as batman is taking no shite from anyone with every fight having him go for what would be kill shots on any other guy. He runs an owl mook down with the bat mobile at one point. FUCK YEAH. Like always the art's as awesome as the plot with not a noticeable drop in quality yet. And if that's all not enough for you there's a back up story staring Alfred's father. Damn fine bang for your buck lads. Damn fine. Go read this book now !

DEATHSTROKE #9

written and art by Rob Liefeld

Well look at this. The 90s LAD is BACK. Well to be fair I guess rob liefeld never really went away but then again I never bought any of his run of hawk and dove. Now I did mean to its just that when the new fifty two started there were so many actually good books to buy that I couldn't justify buying hawk and dove even for a laugh. Now when I herd the liefeld was being made writer AND artist for deathstroke I was like DUDE I'm in for that likes. Now yes the comic itself was probably pretty bad. I say probably because my brain cant except something that nineties being in anyway bad. So yes this comic is most likely bad in every way you can define bad. But its liefeld and I love it.

AVENGERS ASSMBLE #3

written by Brian Michael Bendis art by Mark Bagley

Now this was AWESOME. Really really surprisingly awesome. This issue was all fighting and surprisingly for Bendis he pulled it off pretty well. Yeah I know he's done a lot of fighting arc's in the past but for the last wee while he's been writing very talkie comics with sporadic awesome fights. This is also a very meaty comic which is gid what with most action heavy comics tending to fly by too fast. The villains the zodiac are sort of weak but I quite like that they have one unifying theme. So yeah I'm quite tempted to say that this book was well worth its $3.99 cost. Yeah the film cash grab comic is turning out to quite awesome !

AVENGERS VS X-MEN #3

written by team marvel art by Jr Jr

Yeah so captain America vs wolverine this issue ? Cool ? NO not cool ! I know wolverine has a history of switching sides ( dose he ? Or is that just in my head ?) but this is ridiculous. So now not only is Logan not on the x-men's side he' not even with the avengers any more. God damn it marvel. Really the cap vs wolverine fight is the main draw of the issue with the rest of the book being used for more set up and for moving characters around to set up fights in the tie ins which is a real shame as I was hoping the bulk of the event would take place fighting over x-men island. Cyclops is still being a bastard but this issue his utter insanity didn't get a chance to really shine. Sadly the arts still Jr Jr's B style. I'm starting think more and more that kick ass ruined that man.
