comic book quickies 9/3/12

ACTION COMICS #7

written by Grant Morrison art Rags Morales

So superman dose things. And there awesome. Like really really awesome. So the story's back to the past after that amazingly weird yet amazingly fun interlude. So Lex luthor, Jimmy Olsen and Lois Lane walk in to a bar ... and just sort of hang out there while the worlds sort of ending around them. I like this. And its nice to see lex as just a guy that can hang out with people rather than the complete monster final form lex that he will one day become. The hanging stuff was just so battle city-ish. Its still an odd opening plot for what's meant to be the first ever superman story. This issue helps a bit with some nice belief in superman stuff and supes dose finally get his proper costume so that's nice. Now I am likening Morrison's action comics its just been a bit hard to love it. Its not like its been bad or anything it's just not been that solid in its awesomeness and it was a bit shakey when superman had a brief bout of emoness back around issue two. I do look forward to it every month and it is the first comic I read every week one. So I do like it. I just wish I liked it more.

DETECTIVE COMICS #7

written and art by Tony S. Daniel

Guhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. Batman fights some guys on penguins ice casino. I really don't care any more. This comics just so guhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. Ya get me ? Its just trying too hard to be grim and gritty. But I cant say that because these past two issues have featured silly villains in the back ground. aahahahahahahah! But on the other hand the actual main villains are a snake dude and a some eye patch lady that I'm not learning the name of and will just refer to her as eye patch lady. Now these two bad guys plans are so very, very meh. Making the comic so very, very meh. This book has gone from being the B batman book of its first few issues to being the brown shooter of batman comics. Now I do like brown shooters but this is just too brown even for me. BROWN. Its not getting dropped though. Well at least not till we find out what happened to the GOD DAMN JOKER. Its been like SEVEN MONTHS. Afdfjkjhgfdsasdfghjhgfdsasfghjhgfdsasdfghjkhgfdsdfgh ! Those DC LADs what are they like. Now on the positive side this issue did feature the bat sub. Now it was only one splash page but its appearance brings this book up to passable for me. YAY BAT SUB !

JUSTICE LEAGUE INTERNATIONAL #7

written by Dan Jurgens art Aaron Lopresti

The JLI cope with the aftermath of the U.N bombing. Now lads this is a weird one. I really don't know how to feel about it. The JLI takes a massive beating. Like the comic plays out the bombing for tragedy. Like people die. TEAM MEMBERS DIE. Now it is comics we're talking about so I'm not buying the team deaths but there are civilians that die and some of the team are very badly injured. Now all of this is done fairly well its just that this turn for the darker and edgier feels VERY forced and contrasts horribly with the past six issues of fun. The bomb thing feels hugely weak. Yeah it was surprise attack but the team was beating down kirby space god miner guy like only two issues ago. I'm sure they survived a crash landing from SPACE at the end of the last arc. Yeah we get that the JLI are mostly human and arnt god amongst men like the real justice league but this was the wrong way to show that. Batman dose get to be an utter LAD this issue so its not all bad .

comic book quickies 3/2/12

So red lanterns got dropped. Its last issue was just too much for me. It wasn't easy for me to let go of but I gave it five issues and then issue five happened in all its horribleness. So its dropped.

ACTION COMICS #6
written by Grant Morrison art Andy Kubert

Superman fights a tentacle monster, a dinosaur and a GOD DAMN BULL ! First things first this Is a damn hefty comic like yeah it has a back up story that certainly adds to the heft but the first story is just so damn packed its unbelievable. Now I was a wee bit sleepy when I was reading comics this so that may be part of why it felt like it just wouldn't end but reading through it again it still seems jam packed with just plenty going on. I barely got the gist of it the first time through but it made more sense to me than last issue maybe because superman punches dudes. I like that. Now this two month interlude seemed pretty mad when I first herd about it seeing as stuff had just gotten real back in issue four what with that hole brainiac thing going on but after this issue id say it was still mad but at least it was fun and justified in a timey wimey way. I'm likening the back up story's as well so far thieve acted as the books hart when compared to the main story's action silliness and this book really needed that, well it still would be awesome without the backups but its much more awesome with them if you get what I mean. This time the back up was about Clark leavening smallville for college and putting his affairs in order. It was incredibly nostalgic. I can totally get behind that.

Batman shoots a guys toes off. Yeah. Because he's the god damn batman. Right so there's two books going on in this issue. Two books with two very different feels. First we've got the grim dark brownness of batman fighting small time crooks like he's been doing from the start of this new detective comics run which was fine back in the day ( back in the day being six months ago) but now its really starting to drag. The second part of the issue is EVERYTHING to do with the penguin who is written like he's straight out of the Adam west show. NOW THATS AWESOME. Its mainly the wahs he puts into his speech but that's enough for me to love it. It also looks like penguins putting a team together and that's always fun. We also get a sixties TV batman style cliffhanger ending that's even ice themed. So yeah I'm likening the fun parts and really getting board with the grim dark brown parts but like I said above I was just a wee bit tired when I was reading comics this week maybe a wee bit too tired to enjoy this yin properly it really felt like it wouldn't end but not in a good way like action comics.

OH MY YES. What a comic. So gid. So damn gid. Like when I read this book I feel like I'm reading a comic. You get what I mean ? Like it has action and characters. So this is like your standard issue six aftermath plot that you get after most five issue arcs come to a end ware you take an issue out from the action to evaluate what just went down and to set up plot points for the next arc. Now that's what this issue is but it dosent matter in the slightest mainly because at the start we get BUUDY COP batman and booster gold. Yes shit just got real. Remember way back at the start of this book how I said that how batman always has boosters back no matter how bad it look like he's screwed up ? Yeah we get five hole pages of that here. And it is GLORIOUS !!! I really have no way to put into words how awesome batman's faith in booster is. Then rocks fall and the party dies.

Right a wee bit of cross blog promotion going on down here. Take a wee peek at these fine fellows if you enjoy your tech

see my cave man hands have probably linked that wrong but I doubt you'll get that problem over there what with them being techmen.

comic book quickies 6/1/12

Holy hell we're back at week one again ! One more month and it'll be SIX MONTHS since the new 52 started. THATS HALF A YEAR !!! HOW THE BLOODY HELL DID THAT HAPPEN !?!?!?!

ACTION COMICS #5
written by Grant Morrison art Andy Kubert

Well it's the SHOCKING never before told .... origin of superman. Huh? Yeah its superman's origin again. That's cool I spose. Well worth a interlude for. So superman's mum and dad are trying to get off krypton's as it about to explode. Its all very sci fi and the only really awesome thing that happens is krypto the superdog mauling ghost general zod. Really that was the highlight of the issue for me nothing ells really popped out because most of it was just the origin and the rest was ma and pa kent finding supe's. We get the origin of that tin foil goat from issue two so .... yeah GO MORRISON ! I feel like there's a joke in there but I'm missing it. It wasn't a bad issue but I'm back to feeling that Morrison's action comics hasn't been all that grate. Don't get me wrong its been a gid read so far but its not lived up to the hype. Mainly because the opening arc has been so un-opening arc-ish. Well at least for superman. Morrison's superman so far hasn't lived up his batman, memetic badass that he is but maybe old superman just need a healthy run up.

DETECTIVE COMICS #5

Batman fights small time crooks and a NINJA JOKER then has to deal with crowds that have gathered at a shine for the joker outside gotham park. Gid issue not much to talk about really. It was setting up the penguin as the big bad for the next wee while which is awesome as that meaty doll maker dude was just too meh for my likening. That hole shrine to the joke thing didn't really bother me at first but the more I think about it the more it seems to fly in the face of my belief that the general public of the DC universe was less MIND BLOWINGLY INSANE than that of the the marvel universe but I guess this is a new world and its young too so maybe it just needs the insane beaten out of it. Fun comic though and I'm glad it at least took a short brake from the grim dark meat thang its been rocking since issue one.

JUSTICE LEAGUE INTERNATIONAL #5
written by Dan Jurgens art Aaron Lopresti

WHAT A COMIC LIKES. A proper pure comic that's not bogged down with blood or gore or hate or death or bleakness or hipsterness or emotion. Just a pure comicy comic from the 80s, the nice 80s not the grim dark Allen moor 80s you always here about. So the JLI fight the tron lined apocalyptic space miner in what looks to be the final battle of the arc. And its epic. There's also banter. MUCH banter. Between HUMANS. Man what a team book! hopefully its doing well in sales id hate for it to be canceled. And the art is AWESOME. So bright and vivid. Also there is tron lines.

RED LANTERNS #5
written by Peter Milligan art by Ed Benes

Ware JLI is a ture 80s comic red lanterns is very 90s. In a bad way. It's got rob liefeld-ish art but that's not really the main problem that honer belongs to the fact that not a bloody thing has happened. Pun intended. Ohh things have happened not actual things though, not thing things that actually matter. And I could get into that I really could, like iv said before I like filler but the problem is northing really awesome has happened. At all. I cant really remember anything about the last four issues other than grim dark stuff happened and it was red. That's about it. There's been this B plot running though the book about these two guys who's granddad was murdered by some street punk well that came to a head this issue after one of the dudes is arrested for getting back at the punk. That's all fine and dandy but when the dude resists arrest THE COPS BEAT HIM TO DEATH. TO FUCKING DEATH. ON THE STREET. BRITISH FUCKING COPS. AGGGGHHHHHHHH! TO DEATH !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! yeah red lanterns is getting dropped.

MUDMAN # 2
written and art by Paul Girst

Ohhh the contrast ! Mudman is awesome !! very very awesome. In much the same way that the JLI is. Its just a pure comic made of fun. And mud. Its also got quite the heft to it, like its just a nice book to hold. Maybe that makes me sound just a tad mad but the paper quality is just wonderful. You may notice I really haven't talked about what actually happened in the comic that's because I find it hard to talk about things I like, there's only so menny times I can say some thing's awesome and I really like mudman. Its just so awesome. Ha! GO READ IT NOW
