Comic Book Quickies 04/07/2011

Yep faithful readers (all 3 of you), I'm trying my hands at everyone's favourite Mad Hat Pirates feature, COMIC BOOK QUICKIES. I shall try to refrain from simply declaring comics as 'meh', or 'filler'.

The Amazing Spider-Man #664

Dan Slott's run on ASM has been pretty great so far, the return to one writer has really given the series more focus and consistency. The issue continues the Spider Island prelude, with Anti-Venom having kidnapped Peter in order to prove that Martin Li is indeed Mr Negative, and some stuff on the side with Carlie being all detective and shit regarding the Wraith. There's also a page with the crazy current Hobgoblin Ben Urich. It's a fairly enjoyable issue, although that is mostly down to Anti-Venom, who's very enjoyable. The 'revelation' at the end is kinda stupid though, they pulled the same thing with Bruce Wayne a few months ago, and anyone remotely smart would be able to suss it out.

Batman Incorporated #7

First of all, that cover is incredibly cool, but it doesn't actually happen in the issue, well, it kinda does. The issue focuses on Man Of Bats and his son, Raven. It's basically a father and son understanding and appreciation tale, and it works very well. Leviathan threatens the pair and Batman comes in and helps them.
My favourite part of the issue is Man Of Bats Batmobile, it's a totally awesome pick-up truck, which fits in incredibly well in the southern states. Good choice. Overall, this is a Morrison Batman issue, and that should be enough of a recommendation.

Ultimate Spider-Man #160

This issue is the (POLY BAGGED!) final issue of the 'Death of Spider-Man' arc, and yeah, it's pretty good. Poor Peter Parker has been battered, shot and blown up and and he's still managed to defeat most of the sinister six, who have been trying to violently murder the poor teenager. Sadly, Green Goblin is still trucking and has turned into a massive insane monster who will stop at nothing until Peter is dead. Naturally, a fight to the death ensues, but I'm not going to spoil what exactly the 'Death of Spider-Man actually is, unlike Marvel themselves. Longtime collaborator Mark Bagley's art in this issue is awesome as usual, and highlights the emotions of the story from Bendis's excellent script well in the characters faces. A must read.
